Shang-Chi Epic Bus Fight was Destin Daniel Cretton's Initial Pitch for Legend of the Ten Rings

We've all seen the epic bus fight in Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings. After all, it was one of the highlights of the film's first trailer. However, the scene is more than just a teaser of the action sequences in the Marvel Cinematic Universe flick. Destin Daniel Cretton has just confirmed that it was his initial pitch to Marvel Studios that led to the movie's development.

The bus fight is an important scene in Shang-Chi since it is when the titular hero has to summon the skills he tried to hide in an effort to save himself, his friend, and a bus filled with terrified passengers. It's a scene that Cretton had imagined for his film right from the start.

"The bus fight was part of my initial pitch, which was really just a what-if scenario," Cretton told The Hollywood Reporter. He then explained how he wanted to do something different for Shang-Chi.

"As part of my pitch, I was explaining the type of fight sequences that I enjoy, ones where the stakes just keep rising as the fight continues," Cretton said. "My what-if scenario was instead of two guys fighting in a park, what if they were on a bus that loses its brakes and is careening down the hills of San Francisco? And our hero has to fight while trying to drive."

Sure, Keanu Reeves and Sandra Bullock have done it before in Speed but Cretton made sure his scene had its own distinct style. That meant having Shang-Chi fight off members of the Ten Rings led by Razor Fist.

We're glad that Cretton's initial pitch opened doors for Shang-Chi and eventually made it into the movie. It's a truly exciting scene and it truly set the tone for The Legend of the Ten Rings.

Shang-Chi and The Legend of the Ten Rings is now screening in theaters.
