Shadow and Bone Season 2 may have concluded with a huge victory for Alina Starkov but that certainly came at a huge price. Although the Sun Summoner managed to revive Mal Oretsev, they ultimately decide to part ways as Alina agrees to marry Nikolai Lantsov and rule over Ravka.

But does this truly mean it's all over for Alina and Mal? Shadow and Bone showrunner Eric Heisserer has just confirmed that the two can still get a romantic reunion despite everything that happened in the second season.

Eric Heisserer recently spoke to Mashable about the changes that the Netflix series made to Leigh Bardugo's books. For one, the showrunner discussed why they chose to have Alina and Mal break up instead of getting a happy ever after.

"One of the things that my writers love so much about the Mal and Alina relationship is how they learned to be honest with each other, how they learned to be transparent about their hopes and fears," Heisserer said.

"We felt that what was giving the relationship the most respect, and the most love for each other, was for Mal to have time to figure out who he is and for Alina to see if this path that she's on is still the direction she wants to go," he continued.

Heisserer then assured fans that Alina and Mal will eventually find each other again. "The both really are still pining for each other. They want to return to each other at a time when they feel confident in their own identities," he said.

This is great news that has people looking forward to the next seasons of Shadow and Bone. Although the series has yet to be renewed, fans are hoping that an announcement will be made soon.

All eight episodes of Shadow and Bone Season 2 are now streaming on Netflix.
