If there's one thing we've proven throughout the years, it's that Netflix surely knows a thing or two about creating a successful fantasy genre project. We've seen the streaming service pull of projects like The Chilling Adventures of Sabrina, The Umbrella Academy, and TheWitcher, and now, prepare to witness a new epic story unfold with the forthcoming release of Shadow and Bone.
Based on American author Leigh Bardugo's fan-favorite novel originally published in 2012, Shadow and Bone are the first of three books that make up the Grisha trilogy. Much like its source material, the series will revolve around the journey of Alina, a lonely orphan who discovers a unique power that thrusts her into the lavish world of the kingdom's magical elite — the Grisha.
The series was officially confirmed to be in development in 2019 and it was only last year when Netflix announced that the live-action series will be hitting the streaming service this April. No word yet if there are plans for a second and third season but considering it's a trilogy we're dealing with here, it's already a no-brainer.
Now, ahead of its highly anticipated debut, Netflix has unveiled several photos and character posters featuring the fantasy show's central figures like General Kirigan (Ben Barnes), Alina Starkov (Jessie Mei Li), and Jesper Fahey (Kit Young). Check out the epic images and character posters here:
The official synopsis for Shadow and Bone reads:
Shadow and Bone brings together the stories and characters of both Shadow and Bone and Six of Crows, two overlapping series that take place in Bardugo's Grishaverse. In a world cleaved in two by a massive barrier of perpetual darkness, where unnatural creatures feast on human flesh, a young soldier uncovers a power that might finally unite her country. But as she struggles to hone her power, dangerous forces plot against her. Thugs, thieves, assassins and saints are at war now, and it will take more than magic to survive.
A lot of hype surrounds the series which has been under active development for quite a while. And because Netflix pretty much nails the fantasy genre, expect this one to be another hit. It'll be interesting to see though if they'll remain faithful to the novel or tweak things along the way. I guess we'll just have to wait and see.
Shadow and Bone will drop on April 23, 2021, exclusively on Netflix.
