Seth MacFarlane and Crew Return in New Teaser for The Orville 2

Last year saw the launch of Seth MacFarlane's Star Trek-inspired show The Orville, and the first season was successful enough to get the show renewed for Season 2. The series is set to come back this December, and we have a new trailer teasing more adventures with Captain Mercer and his crew of the Orville.

THE ORVILLE is a live-action, one-hour space adventure series set 400 years in the future that follows The Orville, a mid-level exploratory spaceship. Its crew, both human and alien, face the wonders and dangers of outer space, while also dealing with the familiar, often humorous problems of everyday life.

When the series first launched, it was panned for not being able to find a consistent tone by critics. A lot of people expected some laugh-out-loud moments with MacFarlane's history with comedy, but The Orville seemed to be more filled with drama, acting more like a spiritual successor of the original Star Trek rather than a comedic parody.

If anything, some people actually prefer this show to the official Star Trek series, Star Trek: Discovery. Some say that the reason for The Orville's success was because of its more generic, episodic approach as compare to the serialized story of Discovery. With The Orville, even casual audiences can enjoy the show, and not just hardcore sci-fi fans—something that resonates with the original Trek. You can jump right in the middle of the story and not feel too lost with the characters.

Catch The Orville 2 on Fox when it premieres Dec. 30.
