Last Sunday, February 21, 2021, the original Magic: The Gathering art for Glen Elendra Archmage by artist Rian Gonzales was sold on the MTG Art Market for $10,000 USD. This is her first published artwork for MTG.
The brand new Glen Elendra Archmage art was featured in one of the cards in the Faerie, Faerie, Faerie Foil drop that's part of the Secret Lair Smitten Superdrop. The fairy-themed drop featured four classic MTG faeries, each illustrated in a colorful, contemporary style from four artists new to the card game. The art is a work of gouache on 300gsm Strathmore hot-pressed watercolor paper and measures 11.5 inches x 14 inches.
The artwork was sold in an auction by Rian's agent, Jiggy Aquino Cruz of NextComicArt, which started on Wednesday, Feb 17, 2021 and ran through the weekend, ending late on Sunday night at 11pm EST.
The auction's opening bid ask was $2,500, but in just 15 minutes the bid went up to $8,000. The art was sold for $10,000 to Private Bidder D.
Rian Gonzales is a Filipina artist who made her debut in Magic: The Gathering after illustrating comic covers for companies like Marvel, BOOM!, Archie, IDW, and others.
