The finale episode of Secret Invasion finally exposed the Skrulls and offered some much-needed clarity to some of our biggest questions since the show started.

However, instead of clearing things up, Episode 6 left fans even more confused regarding the true status of some of the characters who ended up getting replaced by the shape-shifting aliens, most notably James Rhodes.

Now, the divisive Marvel show's director is clearing the air once and for all and his revelation isn't going to make longtime followers of the MCU happy.

Speaking with ComicBook, Ali Selim addressed the heated discourse surrounding Rhodey's Skrull status and it turns out, the character has been replaced by a Skrull since the events of Captain America: Civil War. This means the Rhodey we saw in Avengers: Infinity War, Avengers: Endgame, and The Falcon and the Winter Soldier isn't the real one.

Selim said: "A lot of people have asked about, 'Definitively, when did Rhodey...?' I think his legs not working in the end of episode six and him being in the hospital gown points to [Captain America: Civil War]. And, from there, does it have to be definitive, or is it more fun for the audience to go back and revisit every moment, every Rhodey moment and look at it with a different lens now that they think, 'Oh, he might've been a Skrull there.' And make the decision for themselves, or it'll be answered in Armor Wars."

The director's confirmation is an absolute shocker because War Machine was a pivotal character in both Infinity War and Endgame, with the latter setting him up as one of its emotional cores. Remember his tearful farewell to Tony Stark?

It's incredibly frustrating how they seemingly didn't put much thought into Rhodey's Skrull twist and if we're being honest, questionable decision-making has been a recurring theme with the Multiverse Saga.

All episodes of Secret Invasion are now available to stream on Disney+.
