The end of the first episode of Secret Invasion featured one of the most shocking twists in the MCU to date as Maria Hill was killed off after she was shot by the Skrull villain Gravik, who pretended to be Nick Fury during the moment.

Maria's death was also heartbreaking as she thought that her long-time colleague actually killed her while the real Nick Fury was pleading that it wasn't him as the character was on her last breath.

Now, as a lot of fans are grieving the loss of the long-time MCU character, the actress behind the character has broken her silence and addressed her thoughts on the shocking moment.

In a post-mortem interview with Vanity Fair after the first episode of Secret Invasion aired, Cobie Smulders shared her thoughts on her character's shocking death. "Finally it’s out there. I’ve been well trained—yeah, I’ve had to keep secrets," she told the outlet.

When asked whether she thinks that Maria was able to figure out that Nick Fury didn't actually shoot her on her last breath, the actress believes that it could hopefully be the case.

"I like to think that she, by the time she passed, knew it wasn’t him. Initially, it’s terrifying and so confusing. But I’d like to think she got there," she said.

In reflection on shooting her death scene in London and the feeling of its finality, Smulders expressed her sadness over the character's passing when they filmed it.

She said, "It felt and it feels strange. Maria Hill’s passing is very real, and it’s shocking, and it feels very human. It was a sad day."

The actress has also denied her rumored appearance in The Marvels. "I don’t know anything about that," she said.

However, when Smulders was asked whether she is actually gone, she did note the existence of the multiverse which might bring the possibility although she is also sure that her character has seen her day.

"There is a multiverse now, so anything is possible. But I’m pretty sure this is it," the actress declared.

Maria Hill's death was truly shocking and the moment has been met with divisive reactions as some of them expressed their frustration that the character was brought to the show only to be killed off in the first episode.

However, you can also argue that her death upped the stakes of the series and hopefully the narrative in the following episodes will make the moment more worth it from a storytelling standpoint.
