Sebastian Stan Promises More Exploration for Bucky in the MCU

Sebastian Stan first appeared in 2011's Captain America: The First Avenger as Bucky Barnes, Steve Rogers' childhood best friend, and later on, became one of the Marvel pioneers throughout the years in the MCU. Bucky then appeared in the Captain America sequel, The Winter Soldier, which was also the debut of Stan's titular character. Bucky then reprised his role in several Avengers films, such as Captain America: Civil War, and also took part in the Infinity Saga. Bucky Barnes was last seen in the Disney+ series, The Falcon and The Winter Soldier. However, while Marvel hasn't announced a second season yet, fans wondered what is next for Sebastian Stan's Bucky AKA The Winter Soldier.

After appearing as a Captain America villain which ended in huge character development by being friends with Steve again, fighting alongside the Avengers, Bucky is undoubtedly one of our favorite characters in the MCU.

Bucky's journey was very complex, especially after being controlled by HYDRA, thankfully, the end of The Falcon and The Winter Soldier finally gives a redemption arc for Bucky Barnes.

In an interview with Radio Times, The Falcon and The Winter Soldier star Sebastian Stan sat down to discuss Bucky Barne's future in the MCU, saying that it's always going to be a part of the actor's life:

“Oh yeah, of course… mean, it’s been such a part of my life for such a long time, and it’s very nostalgic, and it’s always going to be a part of my life, one way or another."

When asked about coming back to reprise his role as the titular character, Stan responded, “It’s interesting coming back, you know, going back to a character after so many years because they’re almost like a weird roommate… I feel like it’s just something I can kind of slip into very easily, having played so often, but there’s always places to take him and explore.”

Stan furtherly continued to explain Barne's character development, “I think lastly, he had arrived in a really interesting place. Because for quite some time, he was facing the past and there was an identity question and a sort of a purpose question and relearning about oneself… and I think we got him by the end to that place. So it really does become what does Bucky Barnes do now? And look, there’s something to that as well, because obviously you never really stop growing and learning about yourself or dealing with your past.”

Stan concluded by teasing how there's always going to be more to explore for his character, “But when someone seemingly has fulfilled certain tasks and has found their way to some extent, who are they then? And so there’s always going to be more to explore. I think, you know, if the opportunities allow...”

While there wasn't any announcement yet from Marvel Studios about Bucky Barnes' comeback, for his The Falcon and The Winter Soldier co-star Anthony Mackie, the future is very bright. At the end of the Disney+ series, it seems pretty clear that Sam Wilson now has the Captain America mantle, teasing a Captain America 4 film, in which Bucky Barnes could certainly appear.

The Falcon and The Winter Soldier is still streaming on Disney+.
