Scarlett Johansson's Black Widow Gets Comic Prelude

With Natasha Romanoff set to give excited fans a glimpse at her own origin story in the Marvel Cinematic Universe's Black Widow, Marvel has announced on its website a comic prequel entitled Black Widow Prelude #1. Written by Peter David featuring art by Carlos Villa, the comic is set to hit stores by January next year.

Similar to the enigmatic Romanoff's secret life, details have been kept tightly under wraps. However, it will explore the events which led her to become an Avenger. Its official description reads as follows:

"From spy to Avenger, the enigmatic Black Widow has lived many secret lives. But how do these disparate episodes add up to the life of the heroic Avenger, and what is the thread that connects her past to her future?"

Marvel has also released a copy of the prelude's cover which features a photo of Johansson from Captain America: Civil War. Having been in seven of the MCU's current film lineup, Johansson has been playing Natasha Romanoff for nearly a decade now. Although full plot details of the upcoming film have yet to be announced, this 24th film is set to usher the beginning of the MCU's Phase Four.

"[Black Widow]'s a character that everybody thinks they know everything about," Marvel Executive Kevin Feige shared during the film's official announcement last July. "And she's been in so many of our movies, and you know bits of it, but in no way do you know the whole story.

It is directed by Cate Shortland and will feature new faces in the forms of David Harbour as Alexei/The Red Guardian, Florence Pugh as Yelena, O-T Fagbenle as Mason, and Rachel Weisz as Melina. The film is set to hit theaters on May 1, 2020.
