Samuel L. Jackson Gives Hopeful Response on Nick Fury MCU Future

The upcoming Secret Invasion promises to see the return of Nick Fury in action. Samuel L. Jackson then spoke about how long he intended to play the spy for the MCU.

Sitting down with Empire Magazine, Jackson shared his hopes to continue playing the iconic character, indicating that the line ‘one big fight’ in the show’s trailer has nothing to do with his MCU future.

“I love playing him, and I love the fact that they’re opening him up to all these other possibilities and this whole life that he has. So hopefully I’m not done, and in this new phase of the MCU I’ll still be floating in and out of there somehow, some way,” he said.

Fury is expected to receive a new look for his first Phase 5 appearance. In Secret Invasion, the eye patch, goatee, and leather jacket will be no more. For the actor, the makeover refines the character’s humanity.

“All those things are part of a Nick Fury that’s invulnerable. Here you have a guy who’s showing his face, and showing his age. It’s an opportunity to humanize someone that everybody thinks is superhuman.” said Jackson.

The upcoming Disney+ series will give fans a glimpse into the secret agent’s back story and how being the former director of SHIELD impacted his arc.

“I had to figure out some stuff and work out some new things, which I’ve been trying to do for a while. It’s great to have an opportunity to find out who he was and delve into how much of a toll his job actually takes on his personal life.” explained the actor.

Jackson currently holds the longest tenure in the MCU. He was first introduced as the director of SHIELD in the post-credits scene of Marvel Studios' first film, Iron Man (2008).

The actor appeared in all four Avengers movies from the Infinity Saga, and aside from Secret Invasion, he's also expected to grace The Marvels.

With 15 years and 14 Marvel Studios projects on his resume, Secret Invasion, his first headline role, will allow the 74-year-old star to prolong his MCU stint.

Secret Invasion debuts on Disney+ on July 21.
