  • Quick Answer: Russell T. Davies revealed the canceled 2026 Doctor Who Christmas Special featured a Dalek encounter, while Billie Piper's finale surprise offered fans hope.

The BBC officially announced a 2026 Doctor Who Christmas Special in October 2025 despite Disney+’s exit from the co-production partnership, making it a network-only special.

However, a few months later, the special was eventually canceled, followed by Davies and his Bad Wolf production company’s departure from the show. The BBC then put the series' future into a competitive tender process.

So, as fans may never get to see what the 2026 Doctor Who Christmas Special could have been, Davies thankfully spilled the tea.

What the Canceled Doctor Who Christmas Special Would Have Been About?

Ncuti Gatwa as the Fifteenth Doctor in Doctor Who

Russell T. Davies details his more than eight years as Doctor Who showrunner, from 2005 to 2010 and then from 2023 to 2026, how his latest run came to an end, and what the canceled 2026 Christmas Special could have been in his new memoir, The Queerest of Folk.

In an excerpt from The Guardian, Davies reveals that after the regeneration, the Doctor would have faced his nemeses, the Daleks, once again.

“The Doctor would have traveled to an ‘olde-world English village with a huge mysterious spaceship” while the town celebrates the space festival Winternox. However, there’s a big surprise here that Davies would not want to reveal.

The BBC reportedly loved this late pitch. However, despite already announcing the special, it was eventually canceled due to problems behind the scenes.

Why Did Ncuti Gatwa Regenerate Into Billie Piper in Doctor Who Season 15 Finale?

The Fifteenth Doctor (Ncuti Gatwa) sacrificed himself and used up his regeneration to save Poppy (Sienna-Robyn Mavanga-Phipps) and restore the timeline from the Rani (Archie Panjabi) and Omega (Nicholas Briggs).

He then regenerated into Rose Tyler (Billie Piper) in the cliffhanger ending, hinting that she might be the next Doctor.

However, according to Russell T. Davies, as the production team was already aware that Disney had exited its co-production and global distribution partnership with the BBC, the ending might not have been just a cliffhanger after all, but the ending of the show itself rather than just Gatwa’s era.

As months passed and the BBC was still figuring out its next step, Davies gathered the executives for a meeting and told them they needed someone to reveal at the end of the season to give fans hope that the show would continue.

So, they ended up choosing a regular on the show, Piper, who willingly came in and shot the scenes despite not knowing what would come next.

As the finale aired, fans were hopeful about seeing Piper reunite with David Tennant. However, as Doctor Who’s future remains unknown, it remains to be seen who will be the new Doctor in the next season.
