Ron Howard on Qi'Ra's Future in the Star Wars Franchise

Though Han Solo himself as an interesting enough character, Solo: A Star Wars Story also introduced us to Qi'Ra. With her fate being teased for something big in the future, director Ron Howard teases what's in store for Han's first love interest.

Talking to Empire Magazine (via GeekTyrant) Howard explained:

"In my mind, she knew she couldn't run off with Han. It would be his death and hers. She set him up to go, assuring him that she'd follow, but knowing she couldn't really. She had to clean this situation up as best as she could. I think she hoped she could report in and then disappear, but [Maul] trapped her. He said, ‘Come to Dathomir and we're going to be working closely together', and you realise, ‘Oh my god, she's traded one oppressive boss in for an even scarier dude'. In a way it fuels her ambition and puts her in a position of heightened power, perhaps. Or heightened danger. I thought it was kind of courageous for her."

Besides the need for a female character, I thought that Qi'Ra was a pretty interesting addition in Han's life. Of course there were bound to be women other than Leia in Han's story, and it would make sense that she would be involved with the underground criminals the way that Han was as well.

Personally, I'm crossing my fingers that Lucasfilm keeps trudging on with smaller films like Solo. It may not have made as much money than its predecessors, but I think everyone is starting to realize it's because of poor marketing for the movie.
