Disney's next Star Wars film is titled Rogue Squadron. It will be the very first Star Wars feature film that will be directed by a woman. Wonder Woman director Patty Jenkins will be the one helming the film, which will be released in December 2023. The announcement for the film was made alongside other Disney+ projects that will take place in the ever-expanding Star Wars universe. As of this writing, Rogue Squadron is the only Star Wars film with a release date and a plan for theatrical release.
As Jenkins said in an interview, the Rogue Squadron will not be based on a video game of the same name. Rogue Squadron is a starfighter squadron in the Star Wars universe. Many of Red Squadron's surviving members joined the Battle of Yavin in 1977. They later joined the Rogue Squadron. The squadron made another appearance in the 1980's The Empire Strikes Back.
Not much is known for the cast as the film is still in its early stages. There is no confirmation on the cast members, although there are rumors that Jenkins wants Wonder Woman's Gal Gadot and Chris Pine to join the cast members. It is unclear which characters would she like them to take on if ever she brings them over to Rogue Squadron.
The Rogue Squadron is an elite starfighter team that was founded by Luke Skywalker. They are a group of rebel alliance fighters. Skywalker named the squadron after Rogue One. Rogue One is a team of rebels who stole Death Star plans in Rogue One: A Star Wars Story. The plot details are not yet complete since the movie is still in pre-production. There is still no confirmation on how Rogue Squadron will connect to the plot for Rogue One.
The Rogue Squadron is comprised of some notable pilots. These pilots include Luke Skywalker, Wedge Antilles, Garven Dreis, Jek ‘Piggy' Porkins, Biggs Darklighter, Wes Janson, Corran horn, Tycho Celchu, Derek ‘Hobbie' Klivian, Zev Senesca, and Dak Ralter.
As StarWars.com says, "Rogue Squadron introduces a new generation of starfighter pilots who will risk their lives and move the saga into the future era of the galaxy." Jenkins stated that the film will be original but will derive great influence from the books and games.
Rogue Squadron is in its pre-production stage and will be released on Christmas of 2023.
