It looks like Rogue One director Gareth Edwards has been sharing a lot of secrets at the British Academy of Film and Television Arts fundraiser lately.
After revealing the true story behind the deleted Rogue One trailer scene that featured Felicity Jone's Jyn Erso as an Imperial ground crewperson in disguise, Edwards revealed at the BAFTA St. David's Day fundraiser (via Express) a chopped plotpoint that would have further added to the speculation of Jyn being Force sensitive (and the mother to Daisy Riddley's Rey).
"There was a point in the prologue, there was a version once - as in we talked about it, we didn't go and do it - where the mother was a Jedi," the director explained.
"They were killing all the Jedi, and it was the arrival of the bad guys coming to kill all the Jedi.
"It was written really well, where they turn up and you assume they're there for the dad, and they go ‘where is she' and it evolves from there."
However, once they realized that it could complicate things for Jyn, Edwards and the team decided to chop off Jyn's mother being a Jedi.
"But the problem was, it would mean the entire movie people would be thinking ‘well, is Jyn a Jedi?' and you couldn't really escape that."
And besides, when they later on decided on having Jyn's dad Galen (Mads Mikkelsen) as one of the engineers to design the Death Star, it wouldn't have made sense if Jyn's mother, Lyra, was a Jedi. This revelation from Edwards explains why Lyra had often told Jyn to trust in the Force and why she had kept a Kyber crystal with her. Still, it's pretty good that Edwards decided to chuck the idea – it would have added fire to the whole Jyn-is-Rey's-mother shenanigans.
