Robert Downey Jr Won't be Appearing in Marvel's 'What If?' After All

Fans were pretty excited when Thor: Ragnarok star Jeff Goldblum revealed that he would be in Marvel's What If series on Disney+ and the star even stated that Robert Downey Jr was going to appear. This took many off-guard since many felt that Downey was done with the MCU after his work on Avengers: Endgame, where he was finally able to put Iron Man to rest (literally). Then again, What If will explore alternate universes, which shouldn't be a huge problem for continuity purists.

However, an unnamed source recently told The Wrap that Robert Downey Jr would not be in the upcoming What If series. This is a pretty straightforward message so it seems like we won't be hearing a familiar voice whenever Iron Man appears in the series, which is kind of sad. Still, there are a lot of other MCU celebrities appearing in the show.

We all know that Chadwick Boseman, Sebastian Stan, and Hayley Atwell will be returning as their characters, who will be put in new situations that are not in the MCU. Boseman will play as a version of T'Challa who becomes Star-Lord, Atwell will voice a Peggy Carter who becomes a different version of Captain Britain, while Stan is just Bucky fighting a zombie Captain America.

So yeah, we don't really need an appearance from Robert Downey Jr but it still would have been nice to see him.

Marvel's What If will be debuting in Disney+ in mid-2021.
