Robert Downey Jr Helped Tom Holland Improvise Spider-Man's Heartbreaking Avengers: Infinity War Moment

It's safe to say that Robert Downey Jr. is responsible for most of the awesome moments in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. After all, this is the guy who improvised the "I am Iron Man" line in the first MCU flick. So it shouldn't be a surprise that Downey also made sure Tom Holland would break our hearts in Avengers: Infinity War.

We already know that Peter Parker's heartbreaking last words in Infinity War were ad-libbed by Holland. However, co-director Joe Russo has confirmed on the Reelblend podcast that it was Downey who coached the young actor into giving a truly emotional performance.

"We just started talking to Tom and Downey. Downey is always extremely helpful in blocking. And we started saying, ‘This isn't having the emotional impact it needs to have. Tom, what if, you know, you're a kid. This is scaring the s--t out of you. What if this is something that you don't want to have happen. You can't, you know, you're scared. You don't want to go. So what would happen?'" Russo shared.

The tip certainly worked because Holland immediately gave them a performance that would move the entire crew.

"And then he started improvising. ‘I don't want to go!' And Downey, I think, he helped with the blocking of [Holland] falling into Robert and Robert laying him down on the ground. Frankly, it took about five or 10 minutes to shift. And in the next take, we went out and they nailed it and that was it. Everybody was crying on the set," Russo said.

They weren't the only ones crying. Audiences around the world were bawling their eyes out when this scene was screened last year.

The world certainly has a lot to thank Downey for, from kickstarting the entire MCU franchise to making us laugh, cry, and simply fall in love with Tony Stark.
