Riverdale Producers Developing Live-Action Powerpuff Girls for The CW

The CW has been home to several superhero shows from Arrow to Supergirl, but it looks like the network is going to be the home of some other crimefighters in the form of Craig McCracken's The Powerpuff Girls.

According to Variety, The CW is working on a live-action sequel that will follow the PPG into their young adult lives and how they've been coping with having to be child crime fighters. Here's a description:

In the updated version of the series, the titular superheroes are now disillusioned twentysomethings who resent having lost their childhood to crime-fighting. Will they agree to reunite now that the world needs them more than ever?

The show apparently comes from Veronica Mars producer Heather Regnier with Juno writer Diablo Cody. The series is also set to be produced under the Berlanti Productions banner, the same studio behind the Arrowverse as well as Riverdale.

I have to admit, it's an interesting concept, and I'm curious as to how far the show is willing to take this new take on the PPG. I love Cody's take on womanhood in her films, and it would be interesting to see how she would write 90s icon characters that are the Powerpuff Girls.

Granted, I'm sure there are already a lot of people online who think this will be a bad idea, but if they manage to pull it off, PPG would be enjoyed by a whole new generation of viewers.

No release date has been set for the live-action Powerpuff Girls.
