Rick and Morty Creator Dan Harmon’s Jokes Were Too Weird for Doctor Strange

Rick and Morty and Community creator Dan Harmon may have been brought in to add in a few last-minute writing to last year's Doctor Strange, however a new interview with the mystical Marvel film's director Scott Derrickson revealed how most of the writer's jokes ended up being a little too strange for the movie.

In a recent interview with MovieFone, Derrickson revealed how the team had opted to keep out most of Harmon's jokes since they were a bit too strange for Doctor Strange. Of course Harmon's contributions did a lot to help the production, and the Marvel director calls Dan "a proper genius" with a great sense of humor.

Meeting him in person -- he's odd and quirky -- but what he did was, he came in, saw a cut of the movie, and had a really striking analysis. Because he hadn't read any of the scripts and didn't know the Doctor Strange mythology and I'm not sure how much of a comic book fan he was. But he saw the movie, loved it, and had some breakdown things that were very helpful. That alone was probably his biggest contribution.

In the interview, Derrickson also reveals how valuable Harmon's input was for the film, saying that he will "always be thankful and watch anything he does."

Then he went off and wrote different things. There are some jokes that might have stayed in there, but for the most part, the scenes were a little too out in Dan Harmon-land, even for "Doctor Strange." But I really love the guy and I really think he made a significant contribution in the process. He was the voice we needed to hear at the time, and I will always be thankful and watch anything he does. He's a brilliant dude.

While it's sad that most of Harmon's jokes didn't make it into the film, Rick and Morty fans will understand how general audiences may seem intimidated by the brassy and insanely improvisational humor of Harmon. It would be definitely interesting to see what the Community creator could cook up if he'd be given a director's seat in Marvel.
