There's no denying that the second installment in Disney's Star Wars trilogy, Star Wars: The Last Jedi is the most polarizing entry in the franchise's history but despite having its fair share of critics, many fans consider it to be the best film in the sequel trilogy.

This is why Lucasfilm has once again enlisted director Rian Johnson and this time around, he's been given a heftier role as the helmer of a new Star Wars trilogy. The production company never actually confirmed whether or not Johnson will once again take on a Star Wars project which led many fans to believe that it isn't true.

Now, Lucasfilm president Kathleen Kennedy is finally breaking her silence regarding the divisive filmmaker's potential return to a galaxy far, far away. In an interview with Vanity Fair, Kennedy pretty much confirmed that Johnson is coming back to direct a Star Wars project in the future.

However, the said trilogy is currently on the back burner due to the Knives Out director's packed filming schedule, including his latest deal with streaming giant Netflix.

While it's true that Rian's take on Star Wars isn't everyone's cup of tea, you have to admit that Episode VIII was a breath of fresh air. I'd even argue that it took the franchise to a whole different level both visually and storywise. I guess the main issue longtime fans had with it is that it felt like an entirely different film and ended up alienating Star Wars' most avid followers.

Star Wars' sequel trilogy is available for streaming on Disney+.
