After Rian Johnson directed a movie set in the galaxy far, far, away, he helmed a whodunnit mystery film called the Knives Out. However, unlike with Star Wars: The Last Jedi,Knives Out got a test screening prior to its release, something that can't be done with Star Wars movies because of the fans' anticipation... amongst other reasons.
"It was like a party in the theater, it was really fun. It was like the first time I was like ‘Oh wow, this actually plays. This is good,'" the director shared on Knives Out's DVD release about the film's test screenings (via ScreenRant). "Which is really nice and that's something on Star Wars, you can't test Star Wars movies for a lot of different reasons."
Johnson admits that he has always "hated" doing test screenings, but he really wished he could have done it. "And when we were making Star Wars, at a certain point in the process you're like, ‘God, I would give my left arm to put this in front of 300 people in Burbank and just see how it plays.'"
For the fans of the franchise, it is understood as to why Star Wars films can't be test screened. Though the excitement is at its height, Lucasfilm does this to likely keep the spoilers under wraps and to not get any important details leaked before other people watch it in theaters. Although Johnson would have wanted to do a test screen for Episode VII and see the audience's reactions just like what he did for Knives Out, it would impact his creative choices and also remove the mystery going into the film.
Knives Out is now available on Blu-ray, DVD and Digital HD.
