Rian Johnson Still Hoping To See Billy Dee Williams Reprise His Role As Lando

Star Wars: The Last Jedi might have missed the opportunity to bring Lando Calrissian into Lucasfilm's Star Wars sequel trilogy, but director Rian Johnson still hopes that Billy Dee Williams might reprise his role as the smooth-talking swindler in another Star Wars film.

Fans have been going wild over Donald Glover's version of Lando after seeing the new previews for Solo: A Star Wars Story, and in an interview with Entertainment Tonight, Johnson suspects that fans are going to want to see more of Lando right after the Star Wars spinoff hits off.

"God, I hope we do, I love that character so much. And I think, especially when they see him in Solo, they're going to want to see more of him immediately. As a Star Wars fan, I'm just crossing my fingers we'll get to see Billy Dee back in the cape."

Lando might not have appeared in The Last Jedi, but Johnson did briefly consider bring back Williams for a cameo. The director revealed in an older interview that he actually wanted Lando to replace DJ (Benicio del Toro) in The Force Awakens sequel, however he ultimately opted against it because he thought that Lando wouldn't be the type to betray others like DJ. And Johnson was right – it would have probably broken everyone's hearts to see Lando betraying Finn (John Boyega) and Rose (Kelly Marie Tran) in The Last Jedi. Let's just hope that Lando makes his way into Star Wars: Episode IX.

Star Wars: The Last Jedi is currently screening in cinemas.
