Rian Johnson Reacts to Rumor That His Star Wars Trilogy Will Be Rated G

A rumor came out yesterday that Rian Johnson's Star Wars trilogy was aiming for a G-rating, and though Lucasfilm hasn't confirmed anything, the rumor had spread like wildfire. Now Johnson himself has taken to Twitter to address the news.

He replies:

While a lot of people are taking this as a definitive "No" to the G-rating, I thought it kind of meant that Johnson just doesn't want to hear about this rumor for now. At best, he's still working on his upcoming movie Knives Out, and his Star Wars trilogy should be the last thing on his mind.

Personally, I thought that it would have made sense to make his Star Wars trilogy G-rated since a huge amount of appeal of the franchise is aimed at the children. Even George Lucas himself confirmed that the original Star Wars was a movie made for 12-year-olds—which a lot of fanboys want to argue with as well.

For now, I think that there's just not enough planned out for Johnson's trilogy to say what kind of rating it's going to get. While I'd love to see some more mature storylines in his new trilogy, I wouldn't be opposed to something kid-friendly at all. After all, the magic of Star Wars is that it's fun for everyone. Don't let any exclusivist fans tell you otherwise.

No release date has been set for Rian Johnson's trilogy, but we're expecting Star Wars Episode IX to come out Dec. 20.
