Rian Johnson Addresses Rumors of Mind-Blowing Knives Out Crossover Sequel

Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery (2022) is the sequel to Knives Out (2019) that's currently impressing viewers on Netflix. Directed by Rian Johnson (best known for Star Wars: Episode IX -- The Last Jedi), it sees the return of detective Benoit Blanc (Daniel Craig), who's accompanied by an all-new cast including Dave Bautista (Duke Cody) and Edward Norton (Miles Bron).

Both entries have opened to critical acclaim and financial success, and given the return of Craig's gentlemanly yet eccentric detective, it would seem that this could be the beginning of a brand-new murder mystery franchise. Netflix holds the rights to at least one more Knives Out film, and in September last year, both Johnson and Craig said separately that they would make more sequels.

In November, Johnson announced that he was already working on the script, although it seems that many fans already have a pretty solid idea as to what they would like that next film to be. In a recent interview with Netflix's Tudum, the director addressed a campaign from a number of fans for the next Knives Out film to be a crossover with none other than The Muppets!

"It’s a joke that I thought was pretty brilliant," he said. "And I ended up really giving it some serious thought. As much as I take the murder mystery genre seriously, I take the genre of a Muppet movie seriously."

Johnson elaborated on his reluctance to make a Knives Out/Muppets crossover film, explaining that such a film would end up feeling like either one in its entirety. However, he didn't rule out the possibility of one day making a Muppets film. Here's what he said:

"I think those two things have very different rules. You can either have a Benoit Blanc mystery that has Muppets in it, but they’ll feel out of place. Or you can have a Muppet movie that Benoit Blanc is in, but it’ll feel like a Muppet movie. I wouldn’t want to compromise either of them. And I feel like in order to make it well and make it work, you’d have to make a choice and compromise one or the other. If I ever make a Muppet movie, I just want to make a great Muppet movie."
