Rey's Yellow Lightsaber Almost Had More Relevance in The Rise of Skywalker

Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker might have been a mess but it did give us an interesting ending where Rey basically takes the Skywalker name for herself, with ghost Luke and Leia seemingly approving. We won't be seeing Rey Skywalker in any more movies but the fact that it ended with her holding a yellow lightsaber was praised by many since fans wanted something a bit different since Star Wars protagonists almost-always have blue or green lightsabers.

Well, according to LucasFilm art director Phil Szostak, there were more plans for Rey's new lightsaber. Apparently, the movie was supposed to have her crafting this new lightsaber with help from various Jedi texts. We're going to assume that Leia had some or Rey managed to get some before Yoda used "Kirin" to burn down Luke's little hut.

How many of you got that Naruto reference?

Anyway, this would have been a nice little sub-plot for Rey to do since it would have meant that the new lightsaber would have been more prominent in the movie. Seeing her turn it on and never use it is pretty depressing, though we can only hope that some tie-in material gives us cool Rey stories. Assuming LucasFilm isn't only dedicated to telling past Jedi stories.

Rey, and the Star Wars sequel trilogy in general, will be a divisive point among fans for years to come. I'd argue that they are generally better movies than the prequels, though those movies were planned as a trilogy better. All we can say is, we wish Rey used that new lightsaber more.

Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker is now available through Disney+ and digital stores. Stay at home.
