Remember That Artist Who Drew ‘Realistic’ Pokemon? He Was Hired to Work on Detective Pikachu

Fans have now seen the trailer to Pokemon Detective Pikachu, which has received a very mixed reception from longtime followers of the franchise, though there seems to be more positive than negative responses. One thing we're all still getting used to are the quote on quote "realistic" Pokemon, which have freaked out most fans. Most people are getting used to it and even kind of liking how these Pokemon look, all of which is thanks to artist RJ Palmer.

Palmer has been drawing "realistic" Pokemon for the longest time now but he's always been doing it for fun. Thankfully, all of that fun has led to him getting a job from Warner Bros. and Legendary, who contacted Palmer to design how these Pokemon would look in the movie. The artist was discovered when the film's production designer looked up "Realistic Pokemon" on Google, which revealed Palmer's various sketches.

According to Kotaku, Palmer has been working on these designs since 2016 and 2017. This has obviously paid off since the Pokemon look much better than they should as many of us were actively dreading how this movie would look. Now that the trailer has seemingly calmed everyone down, some fans are actually looking forward to the movie now.

The story begins when ace private eye Harry Goodman goes mysteriously missing, prompting his 21-year-old son Tim to find out what happened. Aiding in the investigation is Harry's former Pokémon partner, Detective Pikachu: a hilariously wise-cracking, adorable super-sleuth who is a puzzlement even to himself. Finding that they are uniquely equipped to communicate with one another, Tim and Pikachu join forces on a thrilling adventure to unravel the tangled mystery.

Pokemon Detective Pikachu debuts on May 11, 2019.
