Red Sonja Movie Is Reportedly Looking for New Lead Actress

One of the many Hollywood projects that have been in the works for a while now is the new film adaptation of Red Sonja from Millennium Films. First, X-Men director Bryan Singer was attached to direct but left due to the sexual abuse allegations against him. Transparent creator Joey Soloway eventually took over the project as the new director with Ant-Man and the Wasp star Hannah John-Kamen cast to play the titular character. It seems like everything was going well now, but now, it looks like the project is once again in limbo.

According to The Illuminerdi, John-Kamen has left the project and the producers are now looking for a new actress to take over the role where they are looking for someone who ideally has the height of 5′ 8″ or taller and can perform action sequences. They also reported that Soloway is no longer attached to the project as well and was replaced by Solomon Kane director M. J. Bassett. There are still plans to start the production this May.

It is unfortunate that John-Kamen is no longer starring as Red Sonja since she seems to be very suitable for the role and we know that she has the chops to both act and do action sequences as she previously proved in Ant-Man and the Wasp and Resident Evil: Welcome to Raccoon City. However, there are no details regarding why she exited the project whether it's scheduling conflict or creative differences.

Since they still have plans to start production in two months, it means that the producers need to find a new actress immediately. At the same time, it also poses a question regarding if the project still has life given all the multiple changes that have happened throughout the years and if it is also still worth it for them to push it, especially since it's also hard to tell if the audience will be interested to see it unless it will go straight to streaming.

Right now, none of the producers have confirmed this update, but it is likely to be true since the outlet has been mostly accurate when it comes to reporting exclusive news and we also haven't heard any significant update on the project ever since the casting of John-Kamen last year which is not an affirmative sign.

It would be interesting to see if we'll hear more updates in the next few weeks whether they'll find a new actress or if the project will be put on hold.
