Mark Ruffalo's Hulk has been through quite a lot in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Starting off as a raging beast in The Avengers, fans get to see Hulk grow more intelligent in Thor: Ragnarok as he starts to form longer sentences and a better understanding of how the world works. Then, we get to see Hulk share his body with Bruce Banner in Avengers: Endgame, introducing fans to Professor Hulk.
While it was quite a surprise for fans to see Professor Hulk in the first act of Endgame, the character was actually supposed to emerge during the final moments of the film's predecessor, Avengers: Infinity War.
Speaking in an interview with ComicBook.com,Infinity War and Endgame writers Christopher Markus and Stephen McFeely decided to open up about some of the tweaks made in the Russo Brother's two-part Avengers movie.
"We screamed bloody murder when it was decided, and we helped decide it, but mostly we were the last ones in the room to acquiesce, was changing the smart Hulk transformation at the end of Infinity War," McFeely revealed in the interview with the entertainment news outlet, "Because it was designed for him to pop out of the [Hulkbuster armor] as smart Hulk, and we're just going, 'No you can't... We can't undo that. Because of the whole first act of Endgame--"
"We'd already shot it," added Markus.
"Yeah, we'd already shot it. How are we going to explain it and all this stuff?" McFeely went on. "It was much better for the movie if it didn't happen, because it's part of this whole somber end of act three. But that was the biggest thing where Chris and I were like, 'They're screwing it up!'"
It's interesting to hear that Markus and McFeely wanted Professor Hulk to come sooner than later in the two-part movie. But then again, it would have messed with the tone of Infinity War if Professor Hulk had appeared in the last bit of the film. It would have also made Hulk's growth feel a bit rushed – we can understand why Bruce Banner decided to merge with the Hulk to create Professor Hulk in Endgame. People do what they can to cope after the Blip.
Avengers: Endgame is available on Blu-Ray, DVD, and Digital HD.
