Earlier this month, Magic: The Gathering pro player Gerry Thompson crushed the competition at Pro Tour Amonkhet, winning $50,000 and the iconic trophy many players dream of getting. Thompson played Mono-Black Zombies in the Standard Constructed part of the competition and beat Hall of Famer Yuya Watanabe's Temur Aetherworks deck. Now a champion, he's sharing his blessings to give back and do something good for the world by auctioning off various Pro Tour memorabillia including the first place trophy!
You can auction for the trophy on eBay, and at the time of this writing, the current bid stands at $3,550.00 USD. "In this auction, you'll be bidding on the first place trophy! Since there have been barely over 100 Pro Tours in Magic's existence, this trophy represents a large portion of Magic history," Thompson wrote. The proceeds of the auction will go to Planned Parenthood.
Thompson continued: "Some have offered to return the trophy to me should they win the auction, and while that's a kind gesture, it is entirely not necessary! I'll always have the memories from the tournament and I don't need a physical representation of that. If the trophy can go toward helping a good cause, that's something that is far more important to me."
In a Starcitygames Premium article, Thompson continued to thank his supporters: "Everyone else: The amount of support I received was truly overwhelming. I can't thank everyone enough. Reading everything people had to say post-PT meant more to me than winning itself and I truly mean that."
