Prince William and Kate Middleton recently visited Cambridgeshire. While there, the couple graced the unveiling of their first official joint portrait. The outing showed how sweet and in sync the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge were. But it also caused sadness among some royal fans.

During a recent discussion on Royally Us, host Christine Ross and Christina Garibaldi talked about Prince William and Kate Middleton’s future royal titles as Prince of Wales and Princess of Wales.

Prince William, Kate Middleton’s Trip To Cambridgeshire Was Bittersweet

Garibaldi also read out loud one of the messages written by royal fans about the couple’s recent trip to Cambridgeshire, as well as their current titles as Duke and Duchess of Cambridge.

“William and Kate's visit to Cambridgeshire, kinda felt like a goodbye. Almost like their time, as you see it, as Duke and Duchess of Cambridge are coming to an end. And their time as Prince and Princess of Wales is about to begin,” the royal fans said (via Express).

Garibaldi then asked her co-host if she shares the same sentiments, and Ross said that she felt the same way.

“You know, I hadn't thought about this until I saw this comment. There are so many things, like especially, during the Jubilee, there were moments that felt more like a goodbye, or like a passing of the torch, rather than sort of, celebratory,” she said.

Ross also said that thinking about Prince William and Middleton bidding their current titles goodbye is making her emotional.

Prince Charles Will Decide Whether He’ll Give Prince William, Kate Middleton The Titles Of Prince, Princess Of Wales

According to the Constitution Unit at the University College of London, Prince William will only be styled as Prince of Wales if Prince Charles decides to pass on the title to him.

“As an adult, Prince William might expect to become Prince of Wales soon after his father’s accession; but that will be a matter for the new King to decide because, strictly, the title is not heritable,” they said (via Marie Claire).

And it’s unlikely for Middleton to inherit the title of Princess of Wales if Prince Charles doesn’t pass on his current title to his eldest son.

As of writing, Prince Charles’ wife, Camilla Parker Bowles, is the one who holds the title of Princess of Wales. However, she doesn’t use it as a sign of respect for the late Princess Diana.

Kate Middleton Might Not Use Her Princess Of Wales Title Like Camilla Parker Bowles

A source told The Telegraph earlier this year that it’s possible for Middleton to follow in Camilla’s footsteps of not using the Princess of Wales title.

“It’s hard to see it not happening. I’m sure it’ll be a bit of a bittersweet moment. This is her [Diana’s] son and his wife, so in some ways, it will be coming full circle—but it will also be a poignant reminder of what we all lost,” the source said (via Cosmopolitan).
