Prince William lost his late mother, Princess Diana when he was just a teenager. Even though it’s been years since the Princess of Wales died, it’s possible that the Duke of Cambridge has never gotten over the loss.
Kate Middleton Will Be Called Princess Of Wales When Prince Charles Becomes King
Us Weekly’s royal correspondent Christina Garibaldi said that Prince William will forever be reminded of Princess Diana and it’s all because of his wife, Kate Middleton. After all, the Duchess of Cambridge will one day be styled as the Princess of Wales.
“There are reports out there that it's going to be a very bittersweet moment for Prince William when his wife Duchess Kate receives her new title when Prince Charles becomes King. It's sometimes confusing that so many titles change when there are shifts in the monarchy but this is definitely going to be a historic title for Princess Catherine,” Garibaldi said on Royally US.
Kate Middleton’s Future Royal Title Will Be Bittersweet For Prince William
Her co-host, Christine Ross added that Middleton being styled as Princess of Wales will be a momentous occasion because no one has been given the title since Princess Diana’s death.
Even though Prince Charles is legally married to Camilla Parker Bowles, the title of Princess of Wales was not given to the latter out of respect for Princess Diana.
“She was Diana, Princess of Wales and it has become almost synonymous with Diana's name and her personality and her legacy is that of the Princesses of Wales so I think when Kate steps into that role it is going to be bittersweet because it’s going to stir up so many memories of his own mother,” Ross said.
Kate Middleton Will Be Styled As Duchess Of Cornwall
Another source made a similar claim about Middleton’s future royal title.
“I’m sure it’ll be a bit of a bittersweet moment. This is her [Diana's] son and his wife, so in some ways, it will be coming full circle – but it will also be a poignant reminder of what we all lost,” the source told The Telegraph.
Other than her Princess of Wales title, Middleton could also be known as the future Duchess of Cornwall.
On his TikTok account, CNN anchor Max Foster said that Middleton is also styled as Her Royal Highness Prince William of Wales, but she prefers to go by the Duchess of Cambridge. But all this could change after Prince Charles ascends the throne.
“When Charles becomes King, William will automatically inherit the title, the Duke of Cornwall and he will become known as the Duke of Cornwall and Cambridge and Kate will be the Duchess of Cornwall and Cambridge. And the convention is William will be made Prince of Wales and that would be the title he would use and Kate would be the Princess of Wales, and when William becomes King as a spouse, Kate will automatically become Queen,” Foster said.
Kate Middleton Won’t Automatically Inherit Her Future Royal Titles
However, Dr. Bob Morris, senior honorary research associate at the constitution unit of the University College London, argued that Middleton will not automatically inherit her new royal titles when Prince Charles becomes king.
“When Prince Charles becomes King, his eldest son does not automatically inherit his father’s title as the Prince of Wales. However, it is likely that any delay will be short before the title is conferred. Accordingly, when her husband becomes Prince of Wales, she will become Princess of Wales as well as sharing the heir's other title of the Duke of Cornwall, plus the titles he uses when in Scotland and Northern Ireland [such as] Duke of Rothesay and Earl of Carrick. She is already a senior member of the Royal Victorian Order, entry to which - like the Garter - is entirely in the Queen’s personal gift,” he told Express.
