Police Arrests Woman Accused of Selling Fake Magic: The Gathering Cards

Jillian Noel Yohe was accused of trying to sell a fake Magic: The Gathering trading card worth thousands of dollars to a Greensburg, PA store, WPXI reports.

The woman allegedly visited Pop! Culture Connection in Greensburg just before they closed on Friday to sell some MTG cards, police said.

Owner Jeremy Fairgrieve purchased the card for $1,000 but a gut feeling prompted him to take a closer look at the potentially expensive card when he got home.

"The price she was asking was very reasonable, enough that it should've drawn a red flag but didn't. I wrote the check and on the way home is when I felt I made a bad move," Fairgrieve said.

Fairgrieve told Triblive that he noticed that the card lacked a trademark small rosette pattern visible only through a magnifying glass.

"If it doesn't have that rosette pattern, that's a dead giveaway that it's a fake," Fairgrieve said.

While Fairgrieve was reporting her at the Greensburg police station, Yohe contacted him to sell another Magic card: A Black Lotus for $2,500. A copy of Black Lotus was recently sold for $166,000.

According to court papers, police set up a sting and arrested Yohe. The 21-year-old woman was charged with theft, attempted theft by deception, forgery, and simulating objects of antiquity or rarity. "As soon as she showed up and we tried to do the transaction that's when they came in and arrested her on site," Fairgrieve told WPXI.

The court papers also revealed that when Yohe was interviewed by police, she was "out of work and was desperate for money", and that Yohe told investigators that she made a plan with a friend to sell fake MTG cards for cash and give him 40% of the profits.

According to the online court records, Yohe did not have an attorney and a phone number for her could not be found. A summons has been issued, and a preliminary hearing is set for May 23.
