Plans For Mamma Mia 3 Addresses By Director

The third time's the charm! Mamma Mia fans are about to dance, jive, and have the time of their lives back on the Greek island of Skopelos, as the possibility of a third movie is within their reach.

Mamma Mia: Here We Go Again director Ol Parker teased in an interview with Screen Rant that Judy Craymer, who produced the first two films, always intended the story to be a trilogy. That said, a third installment is easily part of the plan.

“Judy Craymer, the genius producer behind the musical and the first two films, always plans for it to be a trilogy. That's all I can say. The first one made an enormous amount of money, and I think we made a fair amount too. I know that there is a hunger for a third, and I know that she has a plan. Wouldn't it be lovely?” he revealed.

In 2020, Craymer first revealed her interest to helm a third movie, noting that if she wishes she is certain that Universal will permit her. However, given the pandemic, the idea has been put on hold for a while.

Speaking with The Daily Mail, she said, “I was meant to have been getting on with that, in my head, during these months. But then I got hit with COVID fog. I think one day there will be another film because there's meant to be a trilogy, you see. I know Universal would like me to do it.”

Given its wide success and welcoming production, cast members have also expressed their enthusiasm to take part in the trilogy and feel that joy together on that Greek island singing ABBA’s newest hits.

Earlier this year, Amanda Seyfried told Variety, “Who cares? The plot doesn't even matter at this point. ABBA has got new songs, throw them in there, get the cast together again. It’s very indulgent for us. We just want to go back to Greece and dance around—and then people will love that. So, you know, we will be, we’ll be doing a service to ourselves and to the fans.”

In October, Pierce Brosnan echoed Seyfried’s sentiments and said that he’s in for the potential third film given that plans are already in the works. “I'm in, too. Sure… Yes, of course, I'm sure there's some plans.” he responded.

Based on the 1999 stage musical, the 2008 film Mamma Mia! grossed over $611 million worldwide, making it a huge success at the time of its release. Featuring ABBA hits, it follows the story of Sophie (Seyfried) as she plans the wedding of her dreams to Sky (Dominic Cooper). Sophie, who grew up without a father, yearns for a male figure to accompany her down the aisle. In an attempt to find him, Sophie reaches out to three of her mother Donna’s (Meryl Streep) ex-lovers: Sam (Brosnan), Bill (Stellan Skarsgrd), and Harry (Colin Firth), hoping to find her real father.

Despite the sequel receiving mixed reviews given that Meryl Streep only briefly reprises her role as Donna, it still managed to earn more than $402 million worldwide. Mamma Mia! Here We Go Again shows Sophie dealing with her mother's death and eventually giving birth to her son. Given this situation, the presence of the brilliant Streep in the third film is still undetermined.

Mamma Mia! and Mamma Mia! Here We Go Again are both streaming on various platforms.
