Pirates of the Caribbean producer Jerry Bruckheimer recently confirmed that the next installment in the franchise will be a reboot.
For the past several years, there have been several rumors surrounding the future of the franchise following Johnny Depp's legal controversies and the underwhelming reception of the fifth movie.
There were reports that a female-led spinoff is in the works with Margot Robbie while some claimed that there are still plans to bring back Depp and the other cast members in the past installments.

Speaking recently with ComicBook.com, Bruckheimer was asked about the future of the Top Gun and Pirates of the Caribbean franchises.
He revealed that the latter will be rebooted in its next movie with fresh new ideas and characters.
"It's hard to tell. You don't know, you really don't know. You don't know how they come together. You just don't know. Because with Top Gun you have an actor who is iconic and brilliant. And how many movies he does before he does Top Gun, I can't tell you," the producer said.
"But we're gonna reboot Pirates, so that is easier to put together because you don't have to wait for certain actors."
Based on Bruckheimer's comments, it looks like fans won't expect the return of Depp and the other cast members in the next installment as the franchise is moving forward with a brand new direction.
It is unknown yet whether the reboot will be the Robbie-led spinoff that has been stuck in development for the past few years or another version with different creative involved.
For now, fans should look forward to any news and updates surrounding the future of the franchise as Disney and Bruckheimer are eager to sail it from the ground again.
