Phil Lord Confirms Into The Spider-Verse Surprise Cameo By Original Spider-Man Actor

There's a lot of things that Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse got right, like avoiding yet another unfortunate death by Uncle Ben. However, that doesn't mean that the animated flick didn't pay tribute to Peter Parker's beloved uncle. Phil Lord has just confirmed that Into The Spider-Verse actually featured a surprise cameo from the original Uncle Ben from the Sam Raimi classic.

Several fans have noticed that the film's opening montage once again featured Uncle Ben's iconic line from 2002's Spider-Man. But why did it sound so much like Cliff Robertson? When a fan asked Lord about this on Twitter, the Spider-Verse executive producer confirmed it.

"Yes! It's the great Cliff Robertson," Lord tweeted. Needless to say, it's an awesome tribute to the man who made thousands of fans weep when Uncle Ben died in Peter's arms more than a decade ago.

Robertson was best known for playing the titular character in Charly and for playing the President in 1996's Escape From LA. However, people still associated the veteran actor with his touching portrayal of Uncle Ben in Raimi's Spider-Man trilogy. Robertson passed away in 2011, making his cameo in Spider-Man 3 his final acting role. The tiny cameo in Into The Spider-Verse proved to be a well-deserved tribute to the actor.

There is little doubt that Into The Spider-Verse is only the beginning. A sequel has already been confirmed to focus on the relationship between Miles Morales and Gwen Stacy. In addition to that, Spider-Gwen is set to headline the highly anticipated spin-off film Spider-Women which will include Silk and Spider-Woman.

Spider-Man: Into The Spider-Verse is currently screening in theaters worldwide.
