Peter Dinklage Urges Game of Thrones Fans To Think Before Buying Huskies

Game of Thrones star Peter Dinklage is urging fans of the fantasy epic to stop purchasing huskies just because they'd like to try owning their own Direwolves.

Earlier this month, a report came out that animal shelters and rescue centers have noticed an uptick in the abandonment of Alaskan malamutes and Siberian huskies because of Game of Thrones. Seeing the Stark children interact with their Direwolves (intelligent and loyal mythical beasts that grow up to twice the size of a regular wolf), fans have been adopting wolfish dog breeds only to abandon them after realizing that taking care of a dog requires a lot of work.

Now, according to The Hollywood Reporter, Dinklage has teamed up with PETA to ask fans to think hard before buying a pet. Here's the Game of Thrones star's official statement.

"Not only does this hurt all the deserving homeless dogs waiting for a chance at a good home in shelters, but shelters are also reporting that many of these huskies are being abandoned — as often happens when dogs are bought on impulse, without understanding their needs."

"Please, please, if you're going to bring a dog into your family, make sure that you're prepared for such a tremendous responsibility and remember to always, always, adopt from a shelter."

While some would argue that Game of Thrones can't be blamed for consumer's poor choices, PETA has already noted that films like Beverly Hills Chihuahua, Legally Blonde, Men in Black and of course 101 Dalmatians have a positive correlation with the spike in sales of the films' featured dog breeds and the dog's eventual abandonment because of owners who weren't ready for the responsibility.

It's such a shame that things like these happen and hopefully readers will listen to PETA and Dinklage's call for responsible decision-making before deciding to adopt any pet.
