The Percy Jackson and the Olympians fanbase had been re-ignited today after a rumor came out that Disney was planning to reboot the franchise; and the hashtag #DisneyAdaptPercyJackson had been tweeted more than 100K times. What's interesting is that author Rick Riordan has posted on Twitter that he's trying to make a reboot happen after all this buzz.
Here's his post:
Back in 2010, 20th Century Fox had tried to have their own Harry Potter franchise with Lightning Thief, even going so far as to hire the same director who made Sorcerer's Stone, Chris Columbus. Bad news is, the movie wasn't well received, and one sequel later, the Percy Jackson box office franchise was dead in the water.
If anything, fans of the original didn't like the deviation from source material, particularly the aging up of Percy (he was 12 in the books), and the depiction of the gods. If anything, I thought it was charming that the gods in the book were modernized to fit the times; the movie just had them wearing armor like they came out of Troy.
With all this buzz though, I'm sure Disney is going to make a consideration. Whether it be a film or a Disney+ series, they certainly are sitting on a gold mine of franchise potential. If HBO can make His Dark Materials happen, hopefully there's room for a Percy Jackson series somewhere down the line.
