Paul Feig Hopes the 2016 Ghostbusters can Crossover to the Original Canon

It was no mystery that Ghostbusters (2016) was a critical and commercial bomb, and things got so bad that Sony decided to go back to the original canon with Ghostbusters: Afterlife. What's interesting is, Paul Feig, director of the 2016 reboot, hopes that his team could come back somewhere down the line.

Talking during a panel at TCA 2020 (via /Film) Feig goes on to say that he hopes that his iteration of the Ghostbusters would find a way to come back to the big screen. He says, "I hope… What's so great, in the comic book world, they've done a lot of crossover ones where there's like an interdimensional rip and our team joins up with the original Ghostbusters. So the fact that that's already been laid and made comic book canon, anything could happen so who knows. I would love to see that team come back. We had so much fun making that movie, for whatever controversy it caused. The fact that so many kids love that, that we won the Nickelodeon Best Movie of the Year Award that year makes me very happy."

While I admit there were some people online who were hating the Ghostbusters reboot for the wrong reasons, I couldn't help but think that the film was awful on its own; and it had nothing to do with the new cast or setting. Screen Junkies probably comments best on why the movie was so terrible:

Then again, if kids loved Ghostbusters (2016), then I guess it couldn't be that bad. I'm sure the kids who grew up liking that film will treat it like some kind of cult classic in the next decade—the same basically happened with the Star Wars prequels; hated upon release, but now beloved by the fanbase.

We don't know if the 2016 will ever come back, but Ghostbusters: Afterlife is set to hit theaters July 10.
