The upcoming third season of Star Trek: Picard is expected to be its final one. It won't just be a sendoff for Patrick Stewart's long portrayal of Jean-Luc Picard, but it is also set to be the reunion and most likely the final adventure of The Next Generation crew 21 years after we last saw them in Star Trek: Nemesis.
However, while the upcoming season was being set as the show's final installment, Stewart hinted during the show's panel at the Television Critics Association press tour (via Entertainment Tonight) that it may still continue after the third season and the "doors left open" for more potential adventures.
"If we can maintain the work, the quality that we did on season 1, 2 and 3 of Picard, then absolutely, yes, because there is still enormous potential for narrative in what we've been doing," he said. "And there are doors left open still. And we didn't close all of them, I think. It was very smart. So yes, yes."
Executive producer Alex Kurtzman also affirmed the actor's comments as he teased that there is a possibility that they will continue more adventures with Jean-Luc Picard after the upcoming final season.
"When we started the series, Patrick and we all talked about wanting it to be three years and feeling like we could really tell a complete story with the season you're now seeing as our endpoint," he added. "That being said, anything is possible. If the show blows the doors off the place, as we're certainly hoping it would, we're very, very proud of season 3. Who knows?"
He also played coy when asked if the final season will set up some potential spinoff projects surrounding other Next Generation characters. "Absolutely," he simply said.
It is interesting to hear that Jean-Luc Picard's adventure might not be over in the Star Trek universe after the upcoming season which is supposed to be its final one. Obviously, it will still depend on the story and how the final episode hints at that possibility. Let's just wait and see whether it will end up happening later on once the public has seen the final season.
