Park Bo Gum Shock: Encounter Star Now Licensed Barber, To Discharge Next Month

Park Bo Gum is now a licensed barber after successfully passing a state exam while serving in South Korea’s Navy. The fan-favorite K-drama star has been part of the country’s military service since his enlistment in August 2020.

A Navy official revealed the good news on Wednesday, Feb. 2. It was said Park Bo Gum took the National Technical Qualification Examination to be a skilled technician (barber) and passed the test in December 2021.

The Dream of Park Bo Gum to Become Skilled Technician

According to Soompi, the 28-year-old actor was serving as a naval sergeant at Gyeryongdae in South Chungcheong Province when he took the examination to become a barber at the Naval Education & Training Command in Changwon, South Gyeongsang Province.

The report revealed that the Reply 1988 star had dreamed of becoming a skilled technician, so he made big preparations by investing his time to take the test.

“The military encourages soldiers to obtain certificates that can be used for self-development or after discharging from the military, and [we are] preparing systems and conditions for this,” the source from the military said. “In addition to Sergeant Park, many soldiers are obtaining certificates in the military.”

Park Bo Gun is set to be discharged on Apr. 30, 2022. However, just like other soldiers, he hasn’t had the chance to use all his vacations day due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

So, he will be out of the military earlier. He is expected to be discharged during his vacation in February.

In South Korea, all able-bodied men are tasked to carry out mandatory military enlistment for about two years. In a country that is often marred with security threats because of North Korea, this service is a must.

Park Bo Gum Returning to Public Transport

Meanwhile, when Park Bo Gum is finally discharged, fans may once again see him taking public transport. The Love in the Moonlight star is one of the few South Korean stars who are not afraid to be seen in public and take the metro.

In fact, in his interview with The Star magazine in 2016, as noted by SCMP, he said public transport is “one thing that he can never give up.” He has been taking the metro when he has no work-related schedule, saying he finds it more convenient.

Aside from convenience, time efficiency and being economical are his reasons why he still takes the subway when he needs to go somewhere or meet someone. For him, it’s the fastest and always on time.

He can also go anywhere in Seoul for just 1,300 Korean won or $1.09. However, he can’t help his agency worry about him as he can attract more people in public, which may put him at risk.

Though Park Bo Gum is enlisted, he was last seen in the 2021 K-drama Seobok. He also made Record of Youth, Itaewon Class and, of course, Encounter, opposite Song Hye Kyo, before he entered the military.
