Parasite Director Bong Joon-Ho Says Marvel Movies Have Great Cinematic Moments

Critically-acclaimed Taxi Driver director Martin Scorsese might not think much of Marvel movies, however, Bong Joon-hoo has a few great things to say about the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

The director of Parasite, this year's Best Picture winner at the 2019 Cannes Film Festival, decided to join the debate about Marvel movies in a recent profile written by Variety. Though the filmmaker says he understands where Scorsese and Francis Ford Coppola are coming from with their comments against Marvel movies, Joon-hoo doesn't really agree with the two, citing films like Guardians of the Galaxy, Logan, and Captain America: The Winter Soldier.

"I have so much respect for Scorsese and Coppola, and I grew up studying their films," Bong says. "So I fully understand the context of their comments and I respect their opinion. But on the other hand, if I look at the films individually, I enjoyed Guardians of the Galaxy, James Mangold's Logan and Winter Soldier by the Russo Brothers. There are great cinematic moments in those films."

While fans might take this as a sign that Marvel might have a shot at bringing Joon-Ho in for a movie, the Parasite director doesn't really seem himself directing a comic book movie any time soon. Though the director respects the creativity that goes into making superhero movies, Joon-Ho has personal issues with the genre in real life, saying that he can't really stand people wearing tight-fitting clothes.

"I'll never wear something like that, and just seeing someone in tight clothes is mentally difficult. I don't know where to look, and I feel suffocated. Most superheroes wear tight suits, so I can never direct one. I don't think anyone will offer the project to me either. If there is a superhero who has a very boxy costume, maybe I can try," the director explains.

Guess that's that. It is refreshing though to see a Cannes Award-winning director like Joon-Ho siding with Marvel.
