It looks like the popular cult science fiction fantasy movie Explorers is going to make its way to the silver screen.
Not only is Paramount Television working on a small screen adaptation of the Explorers, but according to a new report by Deadline, the network has already tapped Cary Fukunaga and David Lowery from The Old Man and the Gun and True Detective to work on a pilot script for the series.
Described as a show focusing its lens on "a boy obsessed with ‘50s science fiction aliens movies who has a recurring dream about a blueprint of some kind," the upcoming Explorers series showcases the friendship of three friends who end up building a spaceship together.
For those who aren't familiar with the original Explorers movie, this description is quite similar to the events of the first film where the young teen Ben Crandall dreams about flying through clouds right over a massive, city-like circuit board after watching his old sci-fi movies. Released in 1985, the film was rushed into production and never properly finished. While the original Explorers was a huge box-office flop for Paramount, the movie obtained a cult following after it was released on VHS.
Right now, with time and money on hand, Paramount has the ability to create a better story, this time in the form of a television series. Unfortunately, fans of the original Explorers may have to wait a little bit longer for the series to come into fruition with Fukunaga and Lowery tied to a busy schedule.
Explorers doesn't have a release date yet but we'll update everyone as soon as we get word.
