Oscar Isaac: Star Wars Episode IX Will Officially End The Skywalker Saga

The Skywalkers are amazing in the sense that they've managed to tie in their drama to the fate of the entire galaxy, but it looks like their story is officially ending come Star Wars Episode IX.

Talking to IndieWire, Poe Dameron actor Oscar Isaac explains:

"It is the end of the entire Skywalker saga… Nine stories. This is the culmination of the entire thing. What J.J. has done, and the entire Lucasfilm team is incredibly fulfilling. It's also special for us because you get to learn a lot more things about these characters."

As it stands, the last living Skywalkers in the movie are Leia Organa and Ben Solo, but with Carrie Fisher having died, Leia will end up having a limited role in Episode IX. Mark Hamill is also set to make an appearance as Luke Skywalker, and I'm guessing he's going to be there to taunt Kylo Ren as a Force ghost; I guess being there as a mentor for Rey is kind of predictable, but I definitely wouldn't rule it out.

While some are still holding out that Rey is a secret Skywalker, I'm really hoping that Abrams doesn't retcon this. I thought it was a very special message to say that greatness can come from anywhere, not just because you have some special lineage. If you want a franchise that keeps coming back to old bloodlines, I'll gladly direct you to Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald. There's a cautionary tale of what Star Wars could have been if they decided to keep sticking to legacies.

For now, catch Star Wars Episode IX in theaters Dec. 20.
