Original Script For Deadpool 2 Turned The Merc With A Mouth Into A Father

Deadpool (Ryan Reynolds) might not seem like the type to become a father, but in some of the earlier drafts for Deadpool 2, the Merc with a Mouth ended up having a child.

Sure the final script might have kept a lot of the familial elements of the Deadpool sequel's early iterations, but according to Reynolds 20th Century Fox almost turned his sexy avocado man into a father.

"The genesis of it was 'What if Deadpool had a child?' Like, what if we started five years later and what would that be like?" the actor said in an interview Entertainment Weekly. "By page 1.5, it was totally untenable. We were just like, 'Nope. Nope. No, no, no. This is never, ever going to work.' We went back to the drawing board and kind of reworked it in a way about wanting to have a child, which is something that so many people I know experience on a daily basis — wanting to have a child but can't."

It wouldn't work, really. It's hard to imagine Deadpool having a child. The Merc with a Mouth's too brassy and irresponsible to have a child holding on to his leg all the time. Imagine all the terrible things that might happen to Deadpool's progeny. And if Deadpool did seriously become a father, his paternal side would dull the wild and crude personality that we've come to know him for.

Luckily Deadpool 2's found a way to bring out the Merc with a Mouth's protective side without changing his character. Revolving around the efforts to play a young mutant played by Julian Dennison, Deadpool will have to deal with Josh Brolin's time-traveling Cable in the sequel to his raunchy R-rated comic book movie. That's about paternal as Deadpool can get.

Deadpool 2 hits cinemas May 18.
