Monkey D. Garp remains a prominent figure in One Piece as Luffy’s grandfather, Dragon’s father, and one of the legendary vice admirals of the Marines. But during his excursion to Hachinosu Island, Garp’s rescue mission with the SWORD members had some flaws. So, is Garp alive in One Piece?
With the premiere of the One Piece live-action, Monkey D. Garp’s name, reputation, and determination resonated among the viewers.
He is one of the fan favorites in the live-action series, and it looks like his participation earlier in Luffy’s story added more value to the series.

What Happened to Garp on Hachinosu Island?
In One Piece Chapters 1087–1088, we witnessed Garp’s plan to rescue Koby on Hachinosu Island (Pirate Island) along with the SWORD members.
This is after Garp was informed of Koby’s heroic sacrifice to protect the lives of 800 marines and a battleship against Marshall D. Teach, aka Blackbeard’s demands.
Of course, Garp will come to the aid of his protégé, despite the danger it poses not only to his life but also to his men.
He wants to save Koby because he believes that his protégé will make a change to the current state of the Marines.
They also shared a lot of moments together, making it look like they were close relatives.
It almost seemed like Koby became the replacement for Dragon, Luffy, or even Aokiji (Kuzan), who was supposed to have followed Garp’s footsteps.
We can say that Garp had a lot of impact on Koby’s aspirations and growth as a character. So, when Koby got into trouble, it was Garp who came to his aid the fastest.
Together with the SWORD members, they infiltrated Hachinosu with only one goal in mind: to rescue Koby.
At first, Garp wreaked havoc on the island, as expected of his godly powers, beating the life out of Blackbeard’s henchmen and even some of the crew’s titanic captains.
His plan was also going smoothly, as Koby and some prisoners on the island managed to escape.
Obviously, Garp had to order everyone to retreat and flee from the island after they retrieved Koby.
However, things turned sour when Koby made some wrong deductions about Shiryu of the Rain, who pretended that he was one of the escapees.
But before Shiryu of the Rain inflicted a sneaky blow on Koby with his Suke Suke no Mi, also known as Clear Clear Devil Fruit, Garp managed to throw himself in front of Koby to receive the attack.
This took a massive toll on Garp’s body, but not enough to bring him down. In fact, Garp managed to smack Shiryu to the ground despite his injuries.
Still, Garp had to face another problem with the arrival of his previous apprentice, Kuzan (previously known as Aokiji), who would stop at nothing to stop Garp and his men from escaping the island.
Impressively, Garp was still able to come face-to-face with Kuzan, but as expected, his injuries limited his attacks and defenses.
Garp eventually dropped to the ground, but upon seeing his men, he decided to stand up once again to buy time and give them an opening to escape from the island.
Garp gathered all the courage he had, along with the remaining strength in his body, to destroy the gigantic hand Alvaro Pizzaro had unleashed to smack his ship that was carrying his men and some of the prisoners of the island.
While Koby and the others were escaping, Garp remained in Hachinosu while being surrounded by the titanic captains of the Blackbeard Pirates.
In a nutshell, Garp sacrificed himself in order to protect the future generation of Marines.
So, Is Garp Dead or Alive?
As of One Piece Chapter 1092, Garp’s status is still unknown, whether he died or he survived on Hachinosu Island following his rescue mission with the SWORD members.
Because of this, the One Piece community is once again divided, as some believe that Garp finally met his end in Hachinosu, while others believe that it will not be the last of him in the manga series.
Those who believe that Garp is dead point out that he had the same laughing face as the rest of the characters (members of D) who happily faced their deaths after giving some profound remarks to the future generation.
And it also sounds like Garp is already passing the torch to Koby, based on his last statements.
On the other hand, those who are saying that Garp is not dead believe that Blackbeard will make use of him in the future events of One Piece to take advantage of Luffy and even Dragon.
Garp will become Blackbeard’s trump card, which will be a game changer in the final war.
