One of Stranger Things 3's Best Ideas Was Added Late

Netflix's Stranger Things Season 3 teamed-up some fun characters and one of the coolest relationships had to be between Steve (Joe Keery) and his Russian-translating coworker Robin (Maya Hawke). The two seemed to be heading to develop romantic feelings for each other, only for it to change into something else. It turns out that the actors themselves came up with that change.

Speaking to the Wall Street Journal, Hawke revealed that Robin and Steve were originally supposed to develop a romantic relationship, but as she and Keery were filming the episodes, she said both of them felt differently about their characters' relationship, and they told the showrunners, the Duffer Brothers, how they felt.

"Throughout filming, we started to feel like she and [Steve] shouldn't get together, and that she's gay," Hawke told WSJ "Even when I go back and watch earlier episodes, it just seems like the most obvious decision ever."

In a separate interview with

, Hawke added: "The Duffer brothers and I, and [executive producer] Shawn Levy had a lot of conversations throughout shooting and it wasn't really until we were shooting episode four and five, I think, that we made the final decision. It was kind of a collaborative conversation, and I'm really happy with the way that it went."

I can see how Robin's sexuality wasn't established until the fourth and fifth season. It seemed that her role is meant to become Steve's romantic interest at first, so that's why Robin's coming-out scene was one of the most surprising moments in the show.
