South Korea’s famous stage director Oh Tae Seok has died. He was 82.

The country’s stage play industry is mourning after the confirmation of Oh Tae Seok’s death emerged. Although he found himself in the middle of sexual misconduct allegations in the years leading to his death, his works in the industry captured people’s hearts.

Oh Tae Seok Dead at 82

The Korea Times shared Mokwha Repertory Company’s statement on Tuesday, saying that Oh Tae Seok died on Monday night.

It did not disclose Oh Tae Seok’s cause of death, but his legacy has since been highlighted by different news outlets.

Before his death, he dedicated 40 years of his life working as a producer, theater director, and playwright. He started his professional career when he launched the theater company, Circuit Stage, in Seoul in 1963.

At that time, he was still a university student. But through that independent company, Oh Tae Seok started producing experimental and creative plays by following styles to prevent producing similar plays as those to traditional Korean plays.

In 1967, he officially made his debut as a writer through his play, Wedding Dress. His masterpiece won the annual new writers' contest in the same year held by the Daily Chosun Ilbo.

Oh Tae Seok expanded his career the following year as a playwright, strengthening his empire when he won a prize for Change of Season by the National Theater and the Kyunghyang Shinmun newspaper.

His other works include Grass Burial, Lifecord, Splash, Between Father and Son, Dream of a Lowly Man, Change of Season, Outing, and Why Did Sim Cheong Throw Herself into the Indangsu Twice?.

Oh Tae Seok’s Controversy

In 2018, the #MeToo movement scored the spotlight after a controversial priest was accused of misconduct. Actors Cho Jae Hyun, comic actor Oh Dal Soo, ACOM Arts Communications CEO Yun Hojin, professor at the Seoul Institute of the Arts, Han Myeongku, and photographer Bae Bien U also got embroiled in a similar allegation.

As for director Oh Tae Suk’s part, an actress accused him of touching her thighs and private area under a table while dining at a restaurant in Seoul.
