Jordan Peele has gone beyond his days as a comedian. Even though we all started to love him as one-half of the iconic duo Key & Peele, Peele has now made a name for himself as the creator and the director of the hit film Get Out. After the success of his first social thriller, he eventually released a second masterpiece that took on another societal issue, Us.

In 2022, Peele is releasing yet another movie that is wrapped in terror and mystery, as he reunites with actor Daniel Kaluuya. Brace yourselves and grab your horses tight for Nope.

Nope premiered on June 22, 2022, exactly one year after Jordan Peele tweeted about his new endeavor. The release date is the only definitive information we have about Nope, and the date was first released through the movie poster.

Nope’s poster featured a single massive cloud looming over a small town with its lights turned off. The only other details included in the poster are the names of the three actors starring in the film and Peele’s name as the director.

Daniel Kaluuya

The cast of Nope will be led by Daniel Kaluuya. Kaluuya and Peele previously worked before in Get Out; another social horror film created and directed by Jordan Peele. Kaluuya became a break-out star in Get Out, for which he nominated for prestigious awards and received critical acclaim.

Kaluuya will be joined by Keke Palmer as one of the main protagonists. This will be Palmer’s first time acting in a horror film for she usually focuses on more comedic parts. This will not be the first time Peele and Palmer will be working together, though, because Palmer made a guest appearance in Peele’s 2013 sketch series, Key and Peele.

Steven Yuen will also part of Nope. Yuen joins the horror film after his successful run for the movie Minari. The Academy Award-winning actor is pretty familiar with horror with horror films though, after starring in the series The Walking Dead.

Aside from the three main characters, we will also be seeing other familiar faces in the film like Michael Wincott from Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves, Barbara Ferrera from Euphoria, and Brandon Perea from The OA

Peele has been pretty secretive with the plot of his new film, Nope. This secrecy adds to the over-all feel of the film, building tension and anticipation as the viewers have no idea what to expect. The best that we can do is to speculate based on what we have on hand, and it’s not much.

From the trailer and the poster, we know that all the crazy events begin with the cloud that arrives over the town. We see that whatever the cloud is, it brings danger, Keke Palmer being thrown through the air, and a battle that the protagonists have to win to survive.

Conquering Monsters Through Social Thrillers

As a guest in Variety’s podcast, Playback, Peele discussed how he would like his social thriller films to conquer each unique monster.

I wanna stay in the genre. While I was developing [Get Out] I was also simultaneously developing four other projects that I call social thrillers. Each one is meant to deal with a different human demon; a different monster that sort of lurks underneath the way that we interact with one another as human beings. So I hope to soon direct another one of these social thrillers—it’s not gonna be about race, it’ll be about something else, but it’s gonna be very cinematic and fun… To come up with the perfect monster for a horror movie we really need to look no further than the monster that is all of us. Not so much an individual psycho killer, but the humanity that gets lost between us.

Nope Should Be More Than Black Horror

In his recent interview with Essence, Nope creator and director Jordan Peele explains to Kaluuya (who also stars in the film) that the movie should be about Black joy beyond talking about Black horror.

It's so tricky being considered in the vanguard of Black horror, because obviously Black horror is so very real, and it's hard to do it in a way that's not retraumatizing and sad. I was going into my third horror film starring Black leads, and somewhere in the process I realized that the movie had to be about Black joy as well, in order to fit what the world needs at this moment. So that is part of why there's sort of a spectrum of tonality of genre in here, because I wanted to give the horror, but I also wanted to give our characters agency and adventure and hope and joy and fun that they deserve.

I think one of the things we have with this film is a movie that transcends the horror genre, in a way. The first film clip [Eadweard Muybridge’s Animal Locomotion] was essentially a Black man on a horse who has been forgotten and erased. Part of this film, to me, is a celebration and a response to that. We can be the leads not only of a horror movie but also action, adventure, comedy, etcetera.

Nope Trailer: Is There a Trailer for Nope?

Yes, there is a trailer for Nope. Universal Pictures released the trailer for Nope on February 13, 2022. The two-minute long clip introduced the premise of the film.

Nope is set in a small Californian town where we find the one and only horse ranch run by a black family. The ranch has been in operations for a long time and it seems the current owners are looking for ways to expand their venture.

One day, a big, dark, looming cloud rolls into the town, casting shadows, bringing in mysterious invaders, and plunging the ranch and its inhabitants into days of horror.
