Nimona: Netflix Debuts First Look Trailer While Mocking Disney For Scrapping The Project

Netflix is releasing plenty of upcoming animated features and the list includes an LGBTQ+ themed feature film titled Nimona.

Nimona might sound familiar to the fans of the Tumblr comic series that was published back in 2015 under HarperCollins. The internet comic eventually went on to become a New York Times bestselling graphic novel.

Nimona follows the shape-shifting teenager Nimona (voiced by Chloë Grace Moretz) who ends up tying her fate with a Knight Ballister Blackheart (voiced by Riz Ahmed), a knight from a futuristic medieval world who was trained to destroy the titular hero.

Though Nimona was initially picked up for an adaptation under Twentieth Century Fox Animation with a slated 2020 release, Disney ended up canceling the project altogether due to its LGBTQ+ themes.

It wasn’t until April 2022 when Netflix had officially announced acquiring the rights to the film with Moretz and Ahmed attached to the starring roles.

That said, Netflix had finally released our first official teaser for Nimona, which you can check out below:

This would not be the first time Disney gets mocked for its traditional Happily-Ever-After formula, especially considering how overused it has become overtime, and Nimona just proved that as she wreaked havoc over the kingdom.

Nimona is seen mocking the common Disney formula of a ‘Once Upon a Time’ intro along with the experimental animation style similar to The Mitchells vs. the Machines.

Apart from Nimona’s devious introduction through her drawings and shape-shifting abilities, the feature film’s very own poster highlights a great tagline summary on what to expect from the titular hero: “A new hero takes shape.”

Nimona is directed by Spies in Disguise co-directors Nick Bruno and Troy Quane, with DNEG Animation in charge of animating the film.

Meanwhile, Robert L. Baird, Megan Ellison, and Andrew Millstein are executive producers of the upcoming fantasy film, along with Roy Lee, Karen Ryan, and Julie Zackary as producers.

Joining the animated feature film alongside Moretz and Ahmed are Frances Conroy, Lorraine Toussaint, Beck Bennett, RuPaul Charles, Indya Moore, Julio Torres, Sarah Sherman and Eugene Lee Yang.

Netflix’s animated feature film Nimona is slated to release on June 30 on the streamer.
