Nicolas Cage Names an Old DC Comic Character He'd Like to Bring to Life

Nicolas Cage is one of the most prolific actors in Hollywood. He played many iconic characters and it seems like he's not stopping any time soon, especially after his recent hit Pig (2021) earned him a second nomination for the Critics' Choice Movie Award for Best Actor. Being in the industry for a while, Cage has explored various genres ranging from action to superhero stuff. He played the part of Ghost Rider in the Marvel movie Blade before and even voiced Spider-Man noir for an animated movie. Now, the actor has revealed his interest in playing an iconic hero for the DC Universe.

Cage was asked during a Reddit Ask Me Anything if there were any undead characters he would like to take on now that he has played both Dracula and Ghost Rider. “Ohh! Yeah! Jim Corrigan, the Spectre (old DC comic character). That would be a fun one,” he said. “But that’s a hard one to pull off because he’s virtually invincible, he has no weakness. You need characters that have kryptonite, that have a flaw, but he’s kinda unbeatable. But that would be a fun one.”

The first issue of DC's More Fun Comics featured The Spectre. Jim Corrigan is a police officer who is killed, denied entry into the afterlife, and then returns to Earth to punish those who commit wrongdoings. He refused to abandon his mission and eventually joined the Justice Society of America because the work was so enjoyable for him. The Spectre's abilities, which include reality-warping, invulnerability, and superhuman strength, are nearly limitless.

Spectre made an earlier appearance in Batman: The Brave and the Bold as a member of the Justice Society of America, voiced by Mark Hamill. Stephen Lobo portrayed Jim Corrigan in the Arrowverse crossover event "Crisis on Infinite Earth." In the crossover, he gives Oliver Queen (Stephen Amell) the power of the Spectre so that Oliver can protect the multiverse from the Anti-Monitor.

Cage portrayed Big Daddy in Kick-Ass (2010) in addition to the Ghost Rider films. Additionally, he was initially slated to appear as Clark Kent in Tim Burton's Superman Lives; however, the project was shelved several weeks before filming began. Cage did eventually portray the Man of Steel after voicing the Big Blue Boy Scout in the 2018 animated film Teen Titans Go! To the Movies.

Cage’s upcoming film Renfield will hit cinemas on April 14, 2023.
