Niantic Is Shutting Down Pokemon Go Gyms Before Rolling Out Major Update

Yesterday, Niantic announced a couple of great new updates for Pokemon Go players. Not only did the developer reveal that it was planning on giving gamers "collaborative group gameplay features" through group capture, the company also said that it was creating a new Pokemon Go gym system.

The videogame developer considers the gym one of the weakest features of the game, and word has it that Niantic is planning to launch the brand new gym system under a clean slate, removing bot accounts and clearing spoofers from the gyms.

Now, to prepare the augmented gaming app for the big gym overhaul, Niantic says (via Comicbook) that it has to shut down the game's gyms shortly before they roll out the new update. Once the gyms shut down, defending Pokemon get kicked out and get returned to their players. After that, gamers won't be able to access any of the gyms for a short period of time till Niantic finishes overhauling the gym system.

Though the Italian version of Niantic's press release about the upcoming updates says the gym shutdown is to take place on June 16, the videogame developer hasn't given any further details about the shutdown and how long it will take place. We'll update everyone as soon as we get word.
